  • From R&B to Calypso Queen: Karen Ashe's Musical Journey

From R&B to Calypso Queen: Karen Ashe's Musical Journey,Leisel L. Taylor

If you're a fan of Caribbean music, then you need to check out this exclusive interview with Trinidad's reigning Calypso Monarch, Karen Ashe, on the popular show "Wah Iz De Scene". This interview was packed with fascinating stories, insights into the world of Calypso music, and even showcased Karen's amazing vocal talents. Karen Ashe's story is one of unexpected turns. She initially dreamed of an R&B career, but it was her performance of a Michael Jackson tune at a talent show that caught the eye (and ears!) of renowned Calypso singer Sheldon Reed. He mentored her, and at the tender age of 11, she began her professional Calypso journey. Despite early skepticism from her own father, a Soca singer himself, Karen's talent and determination propelled her to claim the Calypso Monarch title, a moment her father was able to witness before his passing. One of Karen's most impactful songs is "No Excuse", a powerful anthem that speaks out against the idea that poverty should justify crime. This song resonated deeply with audiences, further solidifying Karen as an artist with both a brilliant voice and a deep social conscience. Although deeply rooted in Calypso music, Karen's love extends to other genres. She revealed her passion for Reggae music and even shared the incredible experience of performing with Buju Banton on stage in Antigua when she was only 12! This highlights the musical versatility that makes Karen such a captivating artist. Karen's drive isn't limited to music. This reigning queen is also a savvy entrepreneur with multiple income streams. Not only is she a successful performer, but she also shares her business acumen in other industries. The interview ends on a high note, literally! Karen Ashe blesses the audience with a live performance of her song "Every Knee Shall Bow", showcasing the vocal power and passion that earned her the title of Calypso Monarch. If this interview left you wanting more, check out the full interview on Youtube https://youtu.be/A8GJoCdRCmU  Be sure to check out Karen Ashe's music on your favorite streaming platforms.
